Palace of Mirrors

About

My name is Matt Lindquist and I’m the creator of the podcast Palace of Mirrors. The podcast is based on a book that I’ve been working on for years. I began working on the book when I realized that another idea I had was too ambitious for my skills. At the time Palace of Mirrors was supposed to be a more approachable project, something to help me get some experience writing. Over the years it has become a much more ambitious, and strange, project than I could ever have realized when I started.

In many ways Palace of Mirrors owes its roots to old pulp science-fiction in the vein of Flash Gordan. The world is filled with larger than life characters with outlandish names like Dark Sheldon, Bluebeard, and Esmeralda. In others it is an attempt at a serious literary work with themes that range from the way that history reverberates, how people become trapped by their pasts, and how hope can be found in a world that is so often cruel and unfair.

Most of all, if Palace of Mirrors is about anything, it is about stories. How we weave them. How we use them to make sense of the world. How they decieve us and how they save us. My fondest memories of my childhood are those where my mom made up stories with me. To this day, some of those stories are more vivid than my actual memories. As we got older, my mom read us books. I can still feel the breeze blowing over my skin, the bricks of our house radiating with heat at our backs, as my mom’s voice washed over me out on the steps of our house.

If Palace of Mirrors ever truly comes together, I can’t say. It is a strange mix of ideas. A world of talking swords and dying moons and pirates bent on revenge. Hopefully, though, it is a journey worth going on. Thank you for joining me as we travel together.
